Social media can be fickle. And so much of what we consume is connected to just a handful of companies (Meta, I’m looking at you!), so it’s important we don’t put all our eggs in one basket. Buuuut social media IS a great way of being social (surprise surprise) and one way to get our blog content out there into the world. So you might as well use it, right? You might as well figure out how to use social media to boost your blog.

Because I do think it’s possible, we just need to adjust how we’re showing up for our blogs on social media.

What is the lifespan of social media?

Here are the biggest social media platforms and their lifespans*:

  • Twitter/X: 24 mins
  • Facebook: 105 mins (1.75 hours)
  • Instagram: 1,200 mins (20 hours)
  • Linkedin: 1,440 mins (24 hours)
  • YouTube: 12,672 mins (8.8 days)

What is the lifespan of a blog post?

Years. Years and years. It’s March 2025 when I write this post, and I took a look at my Google Analytics for my blog from the past 30 days, and you wanna know when I published the top most visited blog posts?

  • May, 2020
  • July, 2018
  • June, 2021
  • March, 2022
  • March, 2023

Already see the difference, right? And these are just the most popular posts in the last 3 months. When I extend my results to the most popular posts from the past 12 months, I see posts from more recently like 2024, but also 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017.

That’s incredible.

Your social media doesn’t last. Short-form content doesn’t last. But blog posts do.

So then how do actually make the most of our short-form content on social media?

How do we make it work, promote our blogs, and connect with others on social media? While blog posts are always going to be better in the long run, using social media in the short run (ha) can be really helpful.

We should use social media to boost our blogs and complement our blogs rather than neglect social media at all or use it in the wrong way. If we don’t, then our social media doesn’t serve our blog, like at all. Why? Here are just a few reasons to get you thinking:

3 reasons your social media is not serving your blog

  1. Unrelated content: If the stuff you’re posting on social media isn’t actually related to your blog or your blog’s focus, people won’t be excited to check out your blog.
  2. Not promoting enough: Not talking about your blog? How will people know you have one? Social media is social. We’re meant to connect with people. Why are you connecting with your blog readers?
  3. Wrong social media platform: Are your readers actually there? Where are they? Maybe they’re not on Facebook but they’re over on Instagram. You might be connecting with the wrong audience.

Our social media should complement our blogs. It gives us the opportunity to connect with our readers, give insight into who we are a bit more, and also share some of the things that we’re sharing on our blogs.

How to use social media effectively to boost your blog

If social media doesn’t last, and blog posts do … and if we’re struggling to actually promote our blogs on our social media to get traffic back to our blog … what can we do actually effectively use the two in collaboration with one another?

I want to offer a few suggestions for various platforms. Of course, you can mix and match these, adapt them for what you want to use them for, and what platforms you use. But hopefully, they give you some ideas.

❗ Wait! Before we get into it, I want to say that no matter what platform you’re using, do not just say ‘new blog post’ and hope for the best. People need a little bit more than that. Give them sneak peeks of your content by:

  • Offering up the main points
  • Talking about what’s in the post and what people can expect
  • Expand on your blog post in a more conversational manner
  • Ask questions and let them know that you’re covering some of the answers in your blog post

Facebook

While Facebook might not be the same as it used to be in terms of reaching people, you can still grow a bit of a following there, which means you have a great opportunity to be sharing your blog posts to lots of people. Here are some tips for sharing your blog posts on Facebook.

  • Facebook Groups: If you have a Facebook Group, then this is an easy place to share your blog posts. Especially if your Facebook Group is within your niche. If it’s not, then I wouldn’t go sharing blog posts willy-nilly in a different niche.
  • Facebook Pages: While Facebook Pages seem to be diminishing in popularity and also engagment, but if you have a thriving Facebook Page then it’s another good place to share your blog posts.

Instagram

Depending on your account, you may find that Stories give you better results than feed posts, buuuut I still think giving the feed posts (the single posts, carousels, Reels etc) a go is a good idea.

  • Instagram StoriesShare behind-the-scenes with your followers and link up your blog posts
  • Carousels: Break down a blog post into a bunch of different slides and share them as a carousel, making sure you use a CTA to check out the full blog post
  • Single post: I find pictures of myself go down quite well (people love seeing people), so you could play around with sharing a photo here or there and maybe talking about what it’s like being a blogger, or something related to a recent blog post … and always direct people to your blog.
  • Reels: Depending on your niche, you may love or hate Reels. I find it easy to create Reels for my business Instagram account, but less so for my blog/personal one. But it’s still a lot of fun to play around with it. See what you can do!

Threads

The new-ish kid on the block is Threads, and I have been loving it! I’m still playing around with what it looks like in terms of sharing blog posts, but here are some things I”ve been trying and what you could give a go at:

  • Grab part of your blog post, like a sentence or two, and share that.
  • If there’s a list in your blog post, create a Thread out of it.
  • Ask people questions about the topic and see how they respond
  • Start a poll with something related to your blog post
  • Give a summary of your blog post and share the link

With Threads, remember not to just drop ‘New Blog Post!’ and the link. It’s all about connection and engaging with other people on the app, so the more you create Threads, the more people will get eyes on your content, which means when you do drop a link here and there, they’re more likely to see it and hopefully click on it!

TikTok

Now full disclosure, I’m not really on TikTok. I have an account and I did do a series in 2024 buuuut I haven’t really utilised it as much as perhaps I should have. However! I do have some ideas.

  • BTS: Share behind-the-scenes of being a blogger, like you might on Instagram stories, for example
  • Your blog post: Create a video in relation to your blog post
  • Break it down: Break down your blog post into bite-size chunks and share them as videos

Pinterest

While not a social media platform, I wanted to throw Pinterest into the mix, too. If you have a Pinterest account you should be sharing your blog posts there. Mutliple times. You can learn more about using Pinterest for your blog here. Second to Google, Pinterest is where I get most of my blog traffic from.

Okay, so what do you think? I hope these ideas for how to use social media to boost your blog were helpful! I think the biggest takeaway I’d love you to have is: experiment.

I think, while social media doesn’t have a long life span and that a blog will always do you better, it’s good to use the tools and platforms we have available to use (and for free, no doubt!!) to help us grow our blogs. And if social media is a way to do it, we should give it a go!

How are you using social media for you rblog right now? What are you finding is working well or not working so well?
